Gathering to Share God’s Love

Every week, a dear friend and I make plans to visit a local restaurant and spend time together. In the rain or the sun, the heat or the cold, my buddy arrives in her car at the front sidewalk of my house at the designated time. As I open the vehicle door, we begin smiling and chatting about family happenings, our writing journey, and funny stories about grandkids and life. Sometimes our schedules, illnesses, or other reasons cause us to miss our special meeting. Whether we are sharing good news or stressful news, we know God is with us. We enjoy gathering to share God’s love.

God placed this special friend in my life. She and I have a lot in common. We also have several differences. Yet, God knew what He was doing when He had us meet and form a beautiful friendship. Whenever we are together, we are sharing the love of God.

Visiting different eateries allows us the opportunity to try new food, enjoy a different atmosphere, and learn more about the local area. As writers, we tend to notice the people around us. Some folks are sitting alone while others meet in groups. Families with young children, seniors meeting for book clubs, folks ordering food and beverages to-go, business appointments, Bible study classes, and much more, fill each place with excitement. One restaurant has tables and chairs filled with men and women playing board games.

As we sit and wait for our orders to be prepared, the commotion around us brings stories to our minds. Trying not to be intrusive or rude, we don’t eavesdrop on conversations. Smiles, a simple hello, and acknowledgement of patrons entering the restaurant, and other gestures can be ways to share God’s love as we gather.

The scents of warm orange cranberry scones, homemade blueberry muffins, coffee, tea, and breakfast dishes fill the air. The staff at each place we visit welcomes everyone with friendly greetings.

At each of these eateries, there are usually small Bible study groups gathered around tables inside and outside. Each person has a Bible, a notebook, and a pen or pencil. There are different groups of ladies, men, young adults, and teens. What a wonderful sight to see people gathering to share God’s love and study the Bible.

Each person has a unique faith journey. Many churches offer Bible study classes for all ages, which may be held at the church. Other churches provide ways to learn about Scripture through online events and classes. Sunday School is another way to deepen our relationship with God.

Whether we choose to study in a large group or a small group, when we gather with others, there are great opportunities to learn more about Scripture and draw closer to God.

Study groups are not the only way to gather and learn. Some churches choose to have monthly or weekly times of sharing food and fellowship. A wonderful gathering called F.E.A.S.T. (Friends Eating and Sharing Together) brings folks together in homes or restaurants. This type of meeting may begin and end with prayer. During their time together, the attendees share a meal and enjoy fellowship. Although this may not involve a particular Bible study, the time spent together can uplift and encourage everyone.

Our area has posted information about Bible Study Running Clubs. Runners and walkers gather for a cardio activity and then meet afterwards for refreshment and study. Sweat and tired muscles don’t prevent them from sharing the love of God.

Another way to gather and share God’s love is through the phone or computer. Text messages with inspirational quotes and Scripture can bring joy to someone who needs encouragement. Emails with a note of thanksgiving for friendship and an inquiry about the person can offer inspiration.

What happens if we live alone or are not able to gather with others in a social setting? We are never alone when we have God in our lives. Some moments call for a one-on-one meeting with God. Those are times when we can pour out our deepest thoughts and praises to the Father. Private times with God are never wasted. Each moment we share with God brings us closer to Him and helps us know His love in deeper ways.

Reading the Bible in a group, studying Scripture with friends and strangers, sharing thoughts with others, and praying are ways to share the love of God.

Volunteering in the community is a wonderful opportunity for the volunteers and those who are being served. Whether providing meals, clothing, books, Bibles, umbrellas, water, or simply a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on, volunteering can be a blessing to everyone. Groups from local churches and clubs often meet at locations to help those in need.

What ways can you think of to gather with others and share God’s love? The list is endless. We are called to love and help each other. May every day be filled with compassion and love for God’s creations. May we gather to share God’s love with others.

“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18: 19-20 NIV)

In His Name,
Melissa Henderson
