the Son

Matthew 3:17, ‘And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”’ (NKJV)

He desired to announce His Son to the world just as He had done all those years before when the promise for mankind was birthed in a barn. But the Father knew that just like then, now they still would not recognize Him as Who they had been longing and watching for. But He would garner their attention. Instead of a star this time, however, the Lord God poured out His Spirit like a dove landing on water as Jesus rose to the surface, and suddenly, the voice of the Father shouted from the sky “This is the Son I love, and My greatest delight is in Him. This is love!”

There was a throb in the heartbeat of mankind suddenly that hadn’t been pulsing strong and vibrant for all the left behind years. The people were empty and needing filled with something other than their own skills and devices. They were searching for a messenger and looking for a Messiah, hopeful that the One promised would arrive. The Master listened from heaven and watched their expectancy with interest. They were ready. He recalled the enthusiasm with which He had drained Himself dry, fabricating fellowship from clay and some vapor, growing gardens of grace and islands of mercy, and His tears filling oceans with favor for this world He so loved. We’ve come a long way, the Creator thought, as He stared through time.

Now, the messenger John had already met Jesus years ago and his spirit jumped within him once again as their paths intersected. John had a strong message, warning of hell and mixed with fire and fear, but the Lord God noted that even still the people suddenly were ready to listen, had had their fill with false prophets and eager for a real word, a Word from heaven. They accepted the instructions of the servant of God in his wilderness-wear and sandals, and John lay down a pathway paved with hope for the One Who was to follow, shadowing the One Who had been forecast. But even this caveman wouldn’t understand the language with which this Jesus would speak. Where the Law taught lessons of God’s wrath and the penalty of the wages of sin, this Love would demonstrate grace and exchange mercy. It would be a new concept foreign to the people. They would become immersed in the Spirit not drowned in shame and gagging on guilt. And with the announcement from His Father, the Son stepped onto the stage, compassion and forgiveness in His hand, ready to authenticate His Father’s love to this messy and broken race.
