Hearing Through The Noise

Once a month, a local writers group meets in the fellowship hall at a church on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina. During the past year, we have met virtually and in person. With a hybrid meeting, attendees could have the option of choosing what was best for them. Each gathering offers an opportunity for fellowship, learning from other writers, hearing guest speakers, and sharing where we are on the writing journey. Some people are published authors and others are beginning the process.

Recently, after a wonderful morning of meeting and hearing from a guest speaker, several people in the group decided to visit a local restaurant for lunch. There were enough of us to need several vehicles to travel to the destination. As we traveled to the meeting spot, laughter and conversation flowed easily. Finding a parking spot was a task, as beach traffic has arrived in the lowcountry. Each driver searched until a place to park was located. Some of us were “dropped off” at the eatery while the driver went to look for a spot to park. I noticed something interesting. When we left the church building and headed for the cars, the sound of wind whipping in the palm trees could be heard. A few seagulls called out in the sky. As we rode in the car, the sounds of conversation and laughter could be heard. Arriving at the busy restaurant, loud music greeted us. The sound of voices singing and instruments playing gave the atmosphere of fun and happiness. Each person found their seat around the table. The server arrived and we ordered food. The music blared louder. One of the ladies at the table asked the server if the sound of the music could be lowered. We were having a hard time hearing each other speak and we definitely wanted to have a conversation. The sound of the music was not lowered. We continued to try to hear each other speak. The delicious food arrived. As each person around the table tried to share what was going on in their life, we all tried to hear through the noise. Thankfully, there was a bit of time for conversation while riding in the vehicles.
Even through the noise, the group of friends was able to chat, laugh, and enjoy the outing.

This situation reminded me that there are times in my life when I have too much “noise” and I fail to hear God’s message. I wonder how many times I am too busy with daily activities and I don’t put God first. From the ever growing list of “to do” items, to neglecting sharing time with the Lord, I have learned valuable lessons. When I begin my day with God, and continue to share conversation with Him throughout the day, I am able to hear His message through any noise. I wake and praise God for His love and mercy. During the day, I pause and give thanks to Him. Taking my concerns and my joys to Him brings peace and comfort. Even with the loud noise at the restaurant, our group was able to enjoy being together. I am thankful for the opportunities God provides to draw closer to Him, even in the noise.

Have you tuned out the noise and shared time with the Lord today?

Blessings,
Melissa Henderson

I’m in a place right now where there is SO much noise, but I’m being intentional about listening for God’s voice in the center of it. God speaks to us and is with us ALWAYS!

    • Yes, I am listening for His voice. Lots of “noise” this week. I am thankful He is with us ALWAYS. 🙂

Your story of the restaurant is such a familiar experience. It seems they always must blare the music! Yet, we make it work. While I husband was still working, I had no problem connecting with the Lord first thing. Now my husband is retired, and there he is when I wake up. He captures my attention first. I’ve discovered that the privacy of my office is where I can connect with the Lord, so I go there early, sometimes before he wakes, sometimes before breakfast, sometimes after. I’ve adapted.

    • Me, too, Ava. The “noise” can bring too many distractions. I’m leaning on God today and everyday to help me sort through the “noise” and only hear Him. 🙂

  • Seeking quiet is so needed today. We often don’t realize how much noise surrounds us. Great message.

    • Thank you Nancy. Yes, there is too much noise around us. We need to seek quiet and share time with the Lord. 🙂

  • What a timely reminder for so many of us inundated with noise. Thank you, Melissa.

The world is a very noisy place so it is very important we learn how to tune it out so we can hear Jesus.
