Under the Radar

I braced myself as we prepared to land on a small gravel runway. I was nineteen, in the Canadian arctic, beyond civilization, in a land inhabited by grizzly bears. The plan was that my eighteen year old pilot friend would return with his mother and then we would hike to the edge of the Beafort Sea and set up camp. Once on the ground we quickly unloaded our tents and my backpack. My friend reassured me that there was a camp just over the hill then he flew off. I paced the gravel runway waiting for his return. As the sun sank in the West so did my heart. It became very clear that they would not be coming back that evening. By then a wind had picked up accompanied by snow. There was a yard light at the end of the runway. Although completely out of place it gave me a sense of security. I took out my tent and fought with the wind finally winning by piling rocks inside. Once in my sleeping bag I lay awake praying and wondering what happened to my friend. At last I fell to sleep.

Early the next morning the sun shone bright as I unzipped my tent and ventured out. The fresh snow had camouflaged it against the tundra. Near the opposite end of the runway were two men. I walked down the runway to meet them. The look on their faces was pure astonishment! “How in the world did this girl get here?” they must have wondered! I soon learned that, not only had my friend flown and landed in restricted airspace, but I had spent the night in a high security base used during the Cold War with the purpose of keeping its eye on neighboring Russia. Although the Cold War had been over for several months they were still on high alert.

The men gave me a ride to camp. It was then that I saw the giant radar dishes. I was ushered directly to the commander’s office. Computer screens and keyboards filled the room. The visibly rattled commander handed me a radio phone and told me to call my friend. I was relieved to hear his voice as he explained why they were delayed. I was led to the camp kitchen where they fed me. While eating I was told that I would need to stay in a room by myself until my friend returned. Evidently, not only had we breached restricted airspace, the plane had managed to land and take off without being noticed by any of them. Add to this the fact that their truck had driven only fifteen feet past my tent without even seeing it. This was causing them much embarrassment as they were actually hosting a convention on security!

How in the world did this happen? My only conclusion was that they were looking for something different. Thankfully for them I was harmless but it severely unnerved them. We too are in a “Cold War” of sorts. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12 Jesus has promised to come and put a final end to the war between evil and good.

When Jesus came as a baby the religious leaders and people took no notice as they were looking for something different. It is a warning to us. Only those that had studied the Scriptures for themselves recognized that star in the sky. Even more serious is the warning given by Jesus for our day. “…Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many…For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.  And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” Matthew 24: 4,5, 21-27 KJV

I urge you to dust off your Bibles and dig into God’s Word. He has promised “To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.” Matthew 13:12
