When you just can’t make up your mind

Is there a decision you need to make, but you just can’t bring yourself so far to choose?

Go back to school and change your career? Take that job offer in another state? Get out of a destructive relationship?
You’re so scared to decide. What if you make a terrible mistake? What if your decision is irreversible and you ruin your life forever?

So, you’re letting weeks, and months and even years pass by, telling yourself you must wait for time to bring you more insight. By not deciding you’re stuck in limbo. Not moving forward. Waiting.

You wish you could make decisions with effortless confidence, because you know that when you decide you can move forward. Deep down you know you’ll learn more when you start doing, even if you make mistakes in the process.
You’re so tired of wasting so much energy and time on this stupid decision. You can feel how this indecision lets your confidence seep away.

How can you decide and get it over with?

When you remind yourself God will work out all things for your good.

It doesn’t help to just repeat those words in Romans 8:28 over and over again: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”

You have to find a way to believe that. To believe it in your bones. In your heart of hearts.

And you can believe it easier when you remind yourself of three of God’s wonderful attributes.

He is powerful enough to work out all things for your good. Remember the wonderful lesson God taught Job in chapter 38 of the book about his abilities and power and his subtlety in ruling over the vast universe?

In verse 33 he says these wonderful words: “Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?”

For a minute or two sit in awe of God’s omnipotence. Think of the vastness of galaxies, the intricacies of living cells, the wonder of language. Our Lord and Father is the creator and Master of it all. He is indeed capable of working all things together for your good.

He is also wise enough to know how to do that. Sometimes we ask ourselves how we can manage a situation to the benefit of all parties involved. Most of the time we struggle with this. To God, however, it’s child’s play to weave and knit events and circumstances together so that they are to the advantage of an infinite number of people.

In Romans 11:33 Paul writes, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!”

In the third place God is also compassionate enough to want to work all things together for your good.
He went through all the trouble to ransom your life with his tremendous sacrifice. Do you think he will let your life go to pieces now? Will he not ensure your ultimate future for his own glory?

Jeremiah 29:11 tells us, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Once you realize however you decide, things will work out in the end, making up your mind becomes easier. Just remind yourself God is mighty, wise and loving enough to work out all things for your good – no matter how you decide.
