Work Like An Ant

Ant complex complete with tower, Central Florida, 2021

Ever watch an ant labor? These tiny common insects accomplish amazing feats. The photograph shows one elaborate mound resulting from underground excavations. Many ants dig to establish tunnels with the right temperatures for young and offload unneeded materials outside.

We can learn from their example. Proverbs 6 advises: “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest” (verses 6-8 NIV).

Getting motivated can be a challenge. Obstacle after obstacle presents itself, and we can feel overwhelmed. However, like an ant, we can move forward and achieve much being diligent, one step at a time.

The work we invest in now may not show immediate results. We have to keep a larger purpose in mind. Each choice we make today, each word we sow, each dollar we spend adds up. Are we constructing a multi-faceted shelter that protects many? Or are we haphazardly on the move with no real depth?

The Bible praises the ant as unusually wise, though small. “Ants aren’t strong but they store up food all summer” (Proverbs 30:24-25 NIV).

Consider how we can store up truths today for later harvest. Reading the Bible forms the structure for what we are able to accomplish. With the time-honored guidance found in scripture, we can be confident that efforts today will reap benefits.
