How to Transition Your Wardrobe to Fall

It is now those months where it’s sometimes cold and sometimes warm, but you are SO in the mood for fall and pumpkin spice. During this time transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall, you may be experiencing summer, winter, and fall temperatures all in one day! Here is your guide for creating outfits to seamlessly transition into the fall season, along with some outfit inspiration!

1. Adding Fall Colors

This is one of the easiest ways to bring in a fall feel to your outfit, even when you don’t want to wear something warm.

Summer is often a chance to wear brighter, lighter colors, and just by bringing in warm neutrals, and darker tones you can give your outfit an autumnal feel.

Here are some great fall colors:

2. Bring in Warm Fabric Textures Mixed with Lighter Textures

Using fabric textures is a great way to mix up interest in your outfit.

Play with mixing light silky tops with a heavier wool blazer, or chunky sweater mixed with a t-shirt or tank top.

Use your own creativity with what you have in your closet!

Here are a few examples of some fabric textures:

3. Dress in Layers

This one may seem pretty obvious, but is one of the best ways to bring in your own creativity and personality! Think about the first two principles, or color and texture when choosing your layers.

Some great layering pieces are:

  • Sweaters
  • Fine Knit
  • Chunky Knit
  • Cardigans
  • Cropped Sweaters
  • Jackets
  • Denim
  • Leather or Suede Moto Jacket
  • Utility Jacket
  • Classic Suit Blazer
  • Boyfriend Suit Blazer (looser fit)

Layers can be worn with all types of outfits, from dresses, to t-shirt and jeans! Bonus: If the day warms up, you can still take off the jacket or sweater and have a great outfit!

4. Accesorize

Add elements that are reminiscent of cooler seasons:

  • Scarves
  • Hats
  • Leather or Suede accessories like belts
  • Warm Toned Patterns (leopard print is a great one, or warm plaids!)
  • Tall Boots
  • Short Ankle Boots
  • Mule Slides
  • Warm toned makeup, deeper lipsticks.

Remember, you don’t need EVERY element. instead practice editing to choose your favorite elements!

Let’s put some outfits together!

Fall Outfit 1

What elements do you notice in this outfit?

This look is mostly monochromatic (one color), but uses a warm caramel colored leopard pattern to stand out as the focus.

Since it is a simpler outfit, a bold deep lipstick is also used.

A heavier suit jacket blazer is paired with the lighter texture of the silky top.

You could easily swap out other colors, accessories to make this look your own. You could try it with a heeled pump, or some ankle booties!

Fall Outfit 2

This is an easy casual look to put together for transitioning into fall.

Your favorite graphic t-shirt (or plain if that’s more your style!), paired with a warm chunky cardigan.

Could easily be paired with jeans or leggings.

A patterned mule brought in for extra fun and playfulness.

How would you make this look your own? What elements could change or be brought in?

Fall Outfit 3

I love a classic, elegant work look with a neutral palette.

Notice the heavier plaid wool skirt, paired with a light cardigan, and a silky top. Lots of texture play here. The neutral tones pull it all together, along with some warm gold jewelry.

A cognac colored leather pump adds some sophistication and a deeper tone.

For more creativity you could change to flats, add tights for a warmer look, or pair with a blazer instead of a cardigan.

Fall Outfit 4

Here is a playful dressy – casual look. This would be perfect for a warmer day where you want to feel cool, but still have an autumn feel.

Choose a t-shirt with some elevated details, like this flutter sleeve tee. Paper bag high waisted trousers are comfortable, but add an extra detail.

Accessorize with some fun textures, like a velvet, beaded headband to add some elegance.

Although you can’t see them, I paired again with a leopard print mule to bring in a subtle pattern. It could easily be dressed up with a heel or a bootie too!

A simple outfit can be made interesting just by accessorizing!

Fall Outfit 5

This look is very trendy for fall. You can take any sun dress, or easy comfortable dress and pair with an outer layer, like the denim jacket shown here, a Moto Jacket, even a cardigan for a cozy feel.

Ankle booties bring this look right in to Fall. You could also try a fashion sneaker for a casual look.

A wide brimmed hat, or fedora can add a Fall vibe, and bonus, can cover up a bad hair day!

Easily make it your own by thinking of it like a formula:

Dress + Outer Layer + Fall Shoe + Accessorize!

Fall Outfit 6

Midi skirts are flattering statement piece that can bring a dramatic flair to your outfit.

Play with patterns like shown, try a floral, snake skin, or solid color. Midi skirts are available in many stores at many price points

Paired with a soft chenille sweater, It exudes luxury, and is also very comfortable and cozy.

Play with colored heels or neutral, try with ankle booties, or over the knee boots when it gets colder out!

I love a pink neutral lip color for fall.
