The Battle
2 Chronicles 20:17-18, ‘”You will not need to fight in this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow and the Lord will be with you.’” Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face to the ground, and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell down in worship before the Lord (NIV).’
If only, He thought, if only His people would see the hand of deliverance He will stretch out for them time and again. He has proffered Himself as their Emancipator from all that enslaves them but He watches generation after generation as they continue to wander in fear and invisibility and captivity.
What a beautiful sight was the face of His beings when they chose to take Him at His Word and how many other kingdoms could fall if more would listen. Their amazement was palatable as they paused over the wasteland beneath them; bodies of enemy armies strewn for miles, not a one had survived.
The instruction had been simple and, simply, they obeyed. The Lord God felt an excitement in His soul; this is partnership, teamwork; this is love! To work for the common goal together, hand in hand, heart to heart, as they had lain prostate before Him on the ground, their cries for help mixing with the dirt at their faces. The enemy had been wiped out by His blessing and their obedience. We could accomplish so much together, the Master whispered. Their neediness had been great in the face of their fear, but so many trust barriers had been broken by the blessing of the victory He had brought about on their behalf. As the people plundered the provision He had known would be left in the wake of the devastation, a thrill coursed through Him. “I will be your God and you will be My people. Worship wins, praise prevails; I will fight for you! It is my battle, not yours. I will be your God and you will be My people,” He said again and again.
