DIG DEEP

Excavating the Depths of God and His Glorious Riches

August 31st, 2022

HE is ALWAYS

Matthew 6:21, ‘”For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”’ (NIV)

We are learning that there is vast spiritual wealth available to each one of us who call ourselves Christians, who consider ourselves children of God. It is buried just under the surface of the Christian life, waiting to be discovered and drawn out. This month we are headed on a dig, so we can explore, excavate and extract the glorious riches God has for His children.

We are driven by time. In fact, that is one thing that has never, nor will it ever, change. Time. While it may seem it is moving at the speed of light, passing by faster than it ever has before, it actually is still the very same, unchanging measure of time. There is not one extra second in any given day nor is there five less minutes, nor do we get an additional day ever or get slighted by a missing few hours here and there. Forever, we are guaranteed twenty-four hours in a day, sixty minutes in an hour as well as sixty seconds in a minute. There are roughly thirty days in a month and twelve months in a year, or fifty-two weeks, and ten years form a decade. None of that is likely to ever change.

Likewise, it is difficult to wrap our minds around the fact that there isn’t one thing either you or I can do to add a single second or breath to our lives. Living devoutly or wasting life chaotically will neither give us more time or less time. It may affect our quality of life, but it will never affect our quantity. The God of the Universe has measured out every breath you take, and He knows down to a milli-second how many I have left. While time is everything to us, and everything we focus on revolves around time, it is time-less to God.

Our God stands outside of time, and what is more, He has already been into our futures. I think if we really grasped that fact, we wouldn’t miss a moment being in tune with Him. We spend so much of our time worrying about what will happen tomorrow, what lies up ahead, what next week or the following month or even the coming year, will bring, that we miss what we are smack-dab in the midst of. I recall so many vacations or special days or unforgettable moments where I spent all my ‘time’ thinking about how badly I wanted to do this or that again that I fully failed to enjoy and eat up and soak in what I was doing right at that very moment. But, we are not promised another day; there are no do-overs or promised repeats, and instant-replay only happens in sporting events.

So, why wouldn’t we invite Him in? To our day, to our ‘next’, to our future, to our lives? Can you fathom what that might mean? If He has already been into my tomorrow, and knows what awaits me, why wouldn’t I allow Him into it; why don’t I listen for His voice to guide me? Wouldn’t I possibly sidestep some catastrophes I am aligned with? Wouldn’t I avoid a mishap I was headed toward if I allowed Him to take me in a different direction, if I listened to Him speak?

What would any of us do today without Google Maps and Siri and TomTom navigating our directions? In fact, I tried recently, and I went into a near panic and had to pull over because I ‘felt’ lost. Immediately, Siri rerouted me. Do you know you have an internal navigation system ready to be invited to direct your steps? We possess the deepest riches—we have the greatest Helper, not only at our fingertips but also in every beat of our heart, we have access to it all in the blink of an eye—but we often do not accept and use Him to the full capacity He has designed us to. Instead, we download apps and google search every question we encounter and run to social media to have all our needs met and our thoughts ‘liked’ and our threads followed. We scroll for solutions and ignore the quiet stroll He invited us to take with Him. The immutability of a Holy God promises to never change His mind about His children (1 Samuel 15:29). Even when He regretted that He made mankind (Genesis 6:6), He still never changed His mind about us. God is many things. One of the greatest things He is to me—He is Always. And that, Beautiful You, is a truth that makes you a spiritual billionaire!

Isaiah 40:12-14, ‘Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, measured heaven with a span and calculated the dust of the earth in a measure? Weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, or as His counselor has taught Him? With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him, and taught Him in the path of justice? Who taught Him knowledge, and showed Him the way of understanding?’ (NKJV)

2 Corinthians 2:10b: ‘The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God had planned all along.’ (MSG)
