I Wrote a Letter to My Love

Memory boxes and bins. I have closets filled with containers of cards, letters, drawings, receipts, and little bits of paper. Yes, I am one of those people who like to have keepsakes. Those wonderful items remind me of special times from the past.

Some of the papers are old and crumbly. Others are newer and have no creases or signs of aging. From time to time, an urge comes over me to go to the closet and pull out those memory boxes. I know when the boxes are opened, there will be smiles and also, tears.

Recently, I reached into one of the boxes and found love letters from my husband. We’ve been married for over 42 years and there have been many letters and notes. Also in the box were letters I had written to him. Smiling and holding each precious piece of paper carefully, I began reading.

The earliest note was one he had left on my car windshield, secured by the wiper. He wanted to chat and I was in class at the local high school. So, he left a note asking if I remembered him and inquired if we could chat sometime. Sweet.

Other letters were written when I was on a trip. We were beginning the boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. The words we shared were precious. We wrote about how much we missed each other and how we looked forward to talking in person.

Next, I found love letters written after we were engaged. The love between us showed through the written words.

Later, in the stack of letters, I found more messages written after we were married. A newly wedded couple experiencing the ups and downs of life, yet still deeply in love. Letters from year after year of married life continued to remind me of how our love has grown and deepened.

We have added birthday notes to the collection. Each birthday morning, we find love notes taped to various places throughout our home. From bathroom mirrors to remote controls to the refrigerator door, love notes are found. All of those notes have been saved.

The boxes are filled with letters and cards from family, too. We have letters that our grown son wrote to us when he was a young boy. There are letters from my parents and my sisters. Each written word means a person took the time and effort to send a special message of love.

I treasure these letters and notes. Some of the envelopes have yellow tints now and others are delicate and need to be handled with tender care. Each one of these special notes touches my heart and soul.

The written message can have a profound effect on everyone. The most precious and special recorded word is the Word of God. Through reading His Word, we have the opportunity to glean more about God and to develop a relationship with the Father. Every time I read the Bible, something new is revealed.

Every time I read the special letters and notes in the memory boxes, a new memory is recalled and cherished. I have written letters to my love and he has written letters to me. I am thankful for those memory boxes and the opportunity to recall special times.

I am thankful for God’s Word which allows us to learn more about Him and the love He has for us.

Have you written a letter to a loved one? How did you feel after writing the letter? What was the response of the person receiving the letter?

Share God’s Word with family, friends, and strangers. His love and glory are for everyone.

Tell it to your children,
and let your children tell it to their children,
and their children to the next generation.” (Joel 1:3 NIV)

In His Name,

I love finding old cards and love letters. They make me SO happy! I’ve kept most of the letters and notes my husband gave me when we were dating. Words are my love language, ha! And I’m grateful for the Bible, too, which is God’s love letter to us.

    • Yes, yes. Words are my love language, too. I’m thankful we have God’s Word. His Words to us are filled with love and hope. Have a blessed day! 🙂

  • This reminds me of how we call the Bible “God’s love letter to us!”

    • I love that! “God’s love letter to us!” Yes. Have a blessed day! 🙂

  • Such a great analogy, Yvonne! The Bible is God’s love letter to us. And I want to read and reread what He wants to tell me about who I am to me. But more importantly, to learn about the lover of my soul. Beautiful piece!
