the GIFT: High & Lifted Up

The Giver rubbed His chin, pinching it between the fore-fingers of one gnarled hand. With the other, He ran His fingers through snarls of hair. They caught and stayed there as He considered His plan. He wanted to see above it all, to look down and take in the entire spanse beneath Him, to marvel at His creation. Joy filled His being as He thought about what already had come to be, what elation lit up His eyes as He dreamt about what was yet to come. But He needed to be far above it all.

“Aha!” He muttered to Himself, “I have a great idea!” And with that He set about His work.

Many hours later, as the night began to eat the light, just as millions of stars started to poke through the deepening blackness, the Giver looked all around Himself and smiled. He was pleased with what He saw and whispered, “It is good, if I do say so Myself!” He tiptoed across the gigantic room occupying every branch of the huge tree and carefully let Himself out the thick wooden door of the treehouse, turning back briefly to look behind. The open room felt so cozy, like home, He thought, as He pushed a seat into position and straightened a replica of a heart He had haphazardly hung on a distant wall before He stepped out onto the large wraparound porch. From the place where He stood, He saw as far as His eye could see. He recalled where everything was that He had just made: the bodies of water and cascading falls, the pointed mountaintops thrusting themselves up from the land, the endless fields of flowers and hills of rustling brush, not to mention the arid and dusty sands.

He glanced where the ball of light had slid down the evening sky and dipped into the sea as if it had gone for a swim. “Hmmm, Sunset! I’ll call it ‘Sunset!” He exclaimed, smiling and satisfied. A myriad of colors, every hue of pinks and yellows and peaches—a favorite blend of His—was fading into the horizon. The Giver felt peace well up inside of Him, threatening to spill out of the corners of His eyes. Even more swiftly now, as if He had pulled a lighted blanket across the enormous space He had deemed ‘sky’, starlight absorbed the ink and dotted it with pleasure.

Far beneath Him, He could see His creation begin to search for places to bed down, their heads and eyes nodding in stillness and reverence. Even the shock of beautiful colored blossoms bowed their heads as if they were taking notice. The waters quieted and the rumble of waves ceased crashing and the streams stood still. Even the wind calmed and everything beneath Him acquiesced all around the Giver, as if to say thank you. Satisfied, He clapped His hands together, and everywhere, everything began to sing.

Psalm 95:1-6, ‘Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song. For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.’ (NIV)
