A Spoon

My Mom collects spoons from different places and displays them on a spoon rack that my Dad made many years ago. There are various sizes and colors among her collection. A spoon is not only something to collect but it’s a handy kitchen tool as well. For instance, it comes in very handy when scooping up a big spoonful of an ice cream Sunday! OOOh, yummy! I too have a fair collection of spoons but mine are not decoration pieces. No all my spoons serve a purpose like helping me to enjoy my favorite sweet treat in the evening, be it vanilla, mint chocolate chip, or rocky road… my spoon is valuable to me.

But what if you were asked to use your spoon for another job? Suppose you found out that there was buried treasure right in your own back yard. It was exceptionally valuable and priceless. Not only is there one valuable piece, but there are multiple treasures all over your back yard. Just below the soil lies the most sought-after gems in the world. You now have the task of digging up the treasure. Some things are close to the surface but some pieces are going to require more digging. Grab that spoon and head out back!

What? You’re not going to use a spoon? It would take far too long you say? So now what? I think most of us would get the biggest shovel we could find and maybe even rent a backhoe. We would dig up our entire yard if need be to find that treasure! Friends may I suggest to you that you have such a treasure? Right in your own back yard no less!

The Word of God holds priceless and valuable treasures just waiting to be unearthed. How deep are we willing to dig to find them? Do we scrape the surface with a spoon or are we willing to get the proverbial backhoe and dig deep? Are we making time to really study and get into God’s word or do we read our “scripture a day to keep the devil away”? I know that when I have my bowl of ice cream, I scoop all the way to the bottom of the bowl. Then, truth be told, I’m likely to tip the bowl up and drink the melted sweetness left in the bottom. Probably more then you wanted to know but it’s honestly what I do. Do we drink in ALL the sweetness God’s word has to offer? God has such sought after gems that are just waiting there for us to find. We don’t need to be Archeologists to discover buried treasures. There is one treasure right at the top that we can all start with…

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him Should not parish but have eternal life.” (ESV)

This is a treasure to behold. God loves each of us. God loves YOU! Get that shovel and find out just how much!
