Autumn in the Lowcountry of South Carolina

Moving from Virginia to South Carolina about six years ago meant journeying through new experiences. The state of Virginia experiences four distinct seasons while South Carolina is covered with hot temperatures and humidity for most of the year. Trading warm weather clothing for shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops has turned us into “locals”. Although the air continues to be warm, autumn in the Lowcountry of South Carolina brings peace and joy.

When we first moved to South Carolina, my husband and I noticed people wearing sweaters and long pants when the temperatures were in the 60’s or 70’s. Being from Virginia, we thought those were perfect days when the breeze brought in delightful temperatures. Too much time didn’t pass before we also began acclimating to the weather changes. On days when we would have worn summer clothing in Virginia, we began to add long-sleeved shirts and long pants to the wardrobe for South Carolina.

In Virginia, we visited apple orchards in the fall. School field trips allowed folks to ride wagons into the fields and pick juicy red apples from the trees.
Leaves of gold, red, and orange floated to the ground in fall. Families could be seen raking leaves into piles. Sometimes the piles were created for jumping into and other times, for bagging and mulching. Fall festivals beckoned visitors with homemade apple fritters, cakes, pies, and more. Yes, the good ole’ times in autumn of Virginia.

In South Carolina, autumn in the Lowcountry holds a special place for everyone. Yes, there are festivals and outdoor concerts to be enjoyed. Instead of raking maple leaves, some people are arranging pine straw in their flower beds, while watching for snakes. A local outdoor drive-in theater has started operating again. Cars line up to find a place to park and view the movie. Beachgoers enjoy the cooler evenings as the ocean winds dance across the sand. Restaurants offer outside dining and musical entertainment. Yes, there are good ole’ times to enjoy in the autumn in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

Changes are expected in life. How we deal with those changes can bring us closer to God and strengthen our faith. Some changes, like an unexpected move, may cause worry and anxiety. Other changes, like moving to a new area to be near family, can bring more happiness and joy than ever imagined.

God has a plan for each of His creations. He is working on His plan at this very moment. Have you paused and thanked God for changes in your life? What can you learn from taking a different path in life?

What special memories do you have about autumn?

Remember, God loves you. Enjoy every season and smile.

Blessings,
Melissa Henderson

Change can be scary, but it can also be SO so good. And no matter what changes come, we know one constant: our Lord God Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Amen amen!

  • Amen. Yes, change can be good. We must learn from change. God always has a plan and He is always with us. Blessings! 🙂

  • An excellent post, Melissa! I an imagine living there in your new location. We also moved south, but our situation isn’t as exciting as yours. Your neighborhood with its wonderful activities would be a treasure for making friends and entertaining grandchildren, as you do so well. God bless you!

    • Thank you Melinda. We do enjoy this special neighborhood. Have a blessed weekend dear friend. 🙂

  • Melissa, this was a beautiful message. I enjoyed the images of fall in both Virginia and South Carolina. We can always find God’s unique blessings wherever we are. I needed this reminder to look for God, even in unexpected changes. He is with us. He loves us! Enjoy this fall season with your beautiful family!

    • Thank you so much. Yes, we can find God’s unique blessings everywhere. Have a blessed weekend! 🙂

Change can bring us into new experiences. And we can learn so much from those differences. I laughed at your description of people wearing coats when it was in the 50 and 60s. Having lived in hot and cold areas of the country, I understand how you felt and how the changes occur over time. I like seeing autumn but we don’t get much here. Thank you for sharing Melissa.

    • Thank you Yvonne. Each area of the world has special blessings to enjoy. Tonight is cooler in the lowcountry. We’ll see what tomorrow brings. haha! Have a blessed weekend! 🙂

  • Sometimes we have trouble being thankful for change–then we adjust and don’t think to look back with gratitude. Thanks, Melissa, for reminding us of this good lesson. God bless!

    • Thank you Nancy. The weather here in the Lowcountry has changed several times today. Cool, warm, hot, cooler. But, we are thankful for God’s glory in each season. Have a blessed week! 🙂
