Finding Freedom

Freedom comes in different forms. Perhaps you have heard someone mention they have been freed from addiction, sin, anger, or even freed from tight-fitting clothing. Freedom is the goal of countries and people at war. What a difference in the meaning of freedom! How do you define finding freedom?

One dictionary defines the word freedom as “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint”. Does that mean we should always say what we’re thinking or act in any way we choose because we have the freedom to do so? No.

God gave us the Ten Commandments which are His rules for our lives. Our true freedom is found in Him.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17 NIV)

When a person forgives someone who has wronged them, the feeling of being released or freed from holding on to the anger or sadness may bring freedom, relief, and renewal for every person involved.
What happens when forgiveness is difficult? How can we find the freedom needed to live as God wants us to live?

Seek Him. Go to God in prayer and ask for His help. God knows our hearts. He hears every prayer. Whisper or say your prayer out loud. God will answer in His way and in His timing.

There are countries where people don’t have religious freedom. Giving their testimony and sharing their faith and love for God is not allowed. News reports and social media reports tell about the heartaches of those people.

The month of July brings celebrations across the USA. Flags of all sizes are displayed and flown. Speeches about remembering the lessons learned from past conflicts and how independence was achieved are scheduled for many cities in America. Red, white, and blue clothing adorns parades in small towns and large cities across America. Melting popsicles drip from the hands of young and not-so-young, watermelon and other fresh fruits are served, and cookouts are scheduled. Families, friends, and strangers gather to enjoy fellowship and conversation.
These gatherings are possible because we are free to participate and share time.

Are there restrictions on freedom? Yes. Consider the child who wants to cross a busy street to meet with friends for playtime. Along with the freedom of enjoying a visit with friends, there are rules to follow. A child may need an adult to hold their hand and walk with them. This is for safety and caution. Freedom may be found by following the rules.

Picture a box filled with your favorite kind of food. You have the freedom to eat every bite, but that is not good for your body or soul. Moderation is key.

Freedom has brought many emotions through the years. Tears of sadness and tears of joy have been experienced by people in all areas of the world.

The best freedom is found in knowing God and developing a deep relationship with Him. Reading or listening to the Bible every day and having a conversation with God leads us to the freedom found in knowing God.

How have you experienced freedom in your life?

Blessings,
Melissa Henderson

We are so blessed by our freedoms in our country and in our faith. It is so freeing to forgive someone because it lifts the weight of anger and hatred from my shoulders. I know some think Christianity is restrictive but I find it freeing as God intended. Thanks Melissa

Great article! I do agree that we truly gain freedom when we surrender to Jesus. His way is the best way!
